Pentagon denies US hand in missile strikes on Syria’s Homs airbase

A missile attack on a Syrian military airport left several dead and wounded, state media said Monday, after the USA warned Damascus and its allies over an earlier suspected chemical attack on a rebel-held town.

Speaking at an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Monday, Russia's permanent representative Vassily Nebenzia denied that chemical weapons had been used in Douma and said Syrian authorities and Russian troops would provide facilities for experts from the Organisation for Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) to visit the attack area.

According to the source, the Syrian air defense systems shot down eight missiles while repelling the attack.

A European diplomat said Western allies would work on building a dossier based on photos, videos, witness testimony and satellite images of Syrian flights and helicopters.

Syrian state TV meanwhile quoted the unnamed military official as saying Israeli F-15 warplanes had fired several missiles while flying over neighbouring Lebanon.

One month ago, after reports of gas attacks against rebels, Secretary of Defense James Mattis said "it would be very unwise for them to use weaponized gas".

"An aggression was perpetrated on T-4 air base in several strikes that is most likely to be an American attack", state television said in a news flash.

On Sunday, President Donald Trump tweeted that the area of the alleged chemical attack was "in lockdown and encircled by Syrian Army", and that it was "completely inaccessible to outside world".

Turkey attacked Afrin in March to drive out the Kurdish militia, known as the YPG, which forms the backbone of the Syrian Democratic Forces, America's main partner in Syria.

The U.N. Security Council will meet twice on Monday following rival requests by Russian Federation and the United States.

The U.S. missile strike was against a Syrian air base which Washington said was used to launch the strike.
