The action came despite China warning that the Taiwan Travel Act would severely damage relations between Washington and Beijing.

President Donald Trump signed off on new rules allowing top-level USA officials to travel to Taiwan to meet their Taipei counterparts, a move that will anger Beijing. It also encourages growing an economic and cultural relationship.

China has since cut all communications with Tsai's government and increasingly tried to isolate Taiwan diplomatically and restrict its participation in worldwide meetings. Rather, it sees it as a rogue province that will eventually be folded back into the communist state - by use of force if necessary.
