Rama Krishna said the Centre has been dragging on its feet on honouring the commitment of granting the special category status since 2014, when Andhra Pradesh was divided and Telangana was formed.

He later tweeted that a united Opposition can force the Centre "to do justice to the people of Andhra Pradesh". As no funds have been released under this agreement and as there was no mention of releasing special package funds to AP in the Union Budget 2018-2019, the political consensus in Andhra Pradesh has now again become focused on special category status.

The TDP has been demanding the Centre to fulfil all commitments made in at the time of bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014.

"The first thing we will do when we come to power in 2019 is give Special Category Status to Andhra Pradesh". However, subsequently, the 14th Finance Commission brought in various changes which subsumed some of the earlier provisions of special category states.

The protest on Tuesday was a continuation of the protest on Monday, where both Houses of Parliament had to be adjourned after MPs started slogans asking for the demands of the state to be met.

Congress does, however, have more time to find a legislative fix after court orders have postponed the deadline. In the meantime, "I have people [Americans] who rely on me to get paid every month", Corzo says.

Members from TDP, YSR Congress, Left parties and the Congress were present at the protest. Telugu people from Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai and Mumbai, along with those residing in New Delhi, participated in the protest.

Andhra Finance Minister Y Ramakrishnudu, who led the TDP delegation, told reporters after the meeting that they stuck to their demand for special status.

Last month too, he took to Twitter to endorse "the just demands of the people of Andhra Pradesh". He said he had agreed to the special package offered in lieu of the promised SCS only as the Centre had stated it was not in a position to grant SCS due to technical reasons, but equivalent benefits would be given.
