'Surviving the ground' dead in the NFL! New catch rule passes

NFL owners voted and approved three rule change proposals on Tuesday at league meetings, one of those being the proposal submitted by the competition committee that would change the standard of a catch. The new rule says: "It is a foul if a player lowers his head to initiate and make contact with his helmet against an opponent". The ball appears to move a little, but Bryant maintains control while going to the ground.

In hopes of clarifying what has consistently been one of the most frustrating issues on the field, the league announced Tuesday that it had redefined, and hopefully simplified, what constitutes a catch. So it is decreed, in the name of safety. This isn't a new helmet-to-helmet rule.

In a practical sense, the whole nonsense about surviving the ground has been done away with.

Murphy did say the league will call more penalties this year.

NFL owners have unanimously approved a proposal to change the league's catch rule, according to a report from NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Borderline completions and incompletions resulted in momentum-crushing replays that slowed games to a crawl. Game-to-game you see a different catch that should have been ruled a catch, or a catch that wasn't ruled a catch the week before.

Congress was client of Cambridge Analytica, says whistleblower Christophe Wylie
The firm went on to deny it had any links to Cambridge Analytica or any of its subsidiaries, and has never worked in Nigeria. Cambridge Analytica denies any of the data acquired was used as part of the services it provided to the Trump campaign.

About the only thing we know for sure is the impetus for why the National Football League is making this happen: player safety and the ancillary elements that go with it from a financial standpoint, such as lawsuits and erosion of the game's popularity among youth (and their parents) concerned about suffering brain trauma.

"That slight movement of the ball - the old language read [if there's] slight movement, then that means you've got to overturn it. ..."

"I think that it's great that it's finally cut and dry, black and white", Fitzgerald said.

Some feel that the new rules will only make the game harder to officiate and could result in more flags and penalties. But we understand there are situations where the ball is going to move.

Expect, then, there to be another meeting of the Competition Committee.

United Kingdom authorities raid Cambridge Analytica HQ
In a statement Friday, Cambridge Analytica reiterated its previous claims that it did not use any of the data during its work for Trump.

As for the new ejection rule, senior vice president of officiating Al Riveron has the authority to eject players from games for egregious non-football acts.

With the rule now including the extension of a football as part of the catch rule, prepared defenses will have more opportunities to force a fumble.

McKay called it "a significant change", noting that it was a "technique too risky for the player doing it and the player being hit".

"These guys need to keep their head and eyes up", McKay said of the offensive linemen.
