Forensic officers have found no evidence of a booby trap bomb, and now suspect a mechanical malfunction of some kind. There were fears the incident was terrorist related after police sent the Army bomb experts to the scene.

A resident of the home, identified as Rod Allen by the local CBS affiliate KPIX, said the gunman took the hostages after allowing some people at a party to leave.

Local outlets, citing police radio chatter, reported that the gunman is armed with an automatic weapon.

The Napa County Sheriff's Office is asking people to avoid the area.

The Yountville Veterans Home is said the largest veterans' home in the country, according to its website.
