Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Thad Cochran (R-MS), citing his failing health, plans to resign from office by April 1, according to an announcement from his office.

Republican challenger Chris McDaniel is scheduled to appear at a Friday night event in the hometown of the man he's running against, U.S. Senator Roger Wicker. But for now, Mississippi's governor will appoint a temporary replacement.

"I want him to be healthy and happy", McDaniel says.

Cochran, 80, announced Monday that he is stepping down because of poor health.

"I've done my best to make decisions in the best interests of our nation, and my beloved state", Cochran said in his statement Monday. Cochran wasn't up for re-election until 2020, but his health issues had sparked chatter about him leaving the Senate sometime this spring. Republicans are anxious that one or both of Mississippi's Senate seats could be in jeopardy unless a top replacement is named for Cochran.

"The control of the U.S. Senate may ride on it", White said. A Mississippi Republican operative said an early list of names to watch as potential Bryant appointees includes state House Speaker Philip Gunn, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, secretary of state Delbert Hosemann, state auditor Stacey Pickering and agriculture commissioner Cindy Hyde-Smith. But McDaniel has left the door open to switching to a special election race for Cochran's seat.
