Sanjrani, an independent senator, was backed by Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P).

"We have agreed on the name of Sadiq Sanjrani for the slot of chairman Senate and Saleem Mandviwala for the deputy chairman and have required number of votes to elect both of them", said the PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari while talking to media persons here at Zardari House after a marathon meeting of the party on Sunday.

(Web Desk) - Backed by joint opposition Sadiq Sanjrani won the Senate election for chairman with as many as 57 votes against the ruling party's candidate, Raja Zafarul Haq, who secured 46 votes.

Earlier, Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) supreme leader Nawaz Sharif chaired a meeting of party leaders and allies in the federal capital today to discuss their candidates for the top offices of the Senate.

The MQM's five senators abstained from the deputy chairman's election.

RS polls: BJP to announce candidate this evening
The Congress's decision to field a candidate in Telangana is surprising as it is in not a position to win a seat. Ketkar, a veteran Marathi journalist and a staunch BJP critic, will fight on a Congress ticket from Maharashtra.

Awami Muslim League chief Sheikh Rashid termed Sanjrani's victory beginning of Nawaz Sharif's democratic defeat.

Hailing from the Sanjrani tribe, mainly based in the remote Chagai district which borders Afghanistan and Iran, the newly-elected chairman - who has just turned 40 - is also the youngest chairman of the Upper House.

PTI chief Imran Khan too congratulated Sanjirani and said that his election as Senate chairman will strengthen the federation.

The PML-N now has 33 seats out of a total of 104, while the opposition Pakistan People's Party (PPP), hitherto the main group in the body, fell from 27 to 20.

That's about a month earlier than the early November release window that's traditionally used for new Call of Duty titles. It's been rumoured for a while that we'd be getting a new Black Ops title as the Call of Duty game this year.

Prior to the polling, Sanjrani appeared confident of victory and claimed to enjoy the support of over 70 members of the house, hinting at defections from the PML-N and its allies.

Senate chairman is the custodian of the upper house and remains politically impartial at the time of discharging his duties.

Meanwhile, Maryam Nawaz tweeted a series of blistering messages following the Senate chairman elections. In absence of the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Senate chairman acts as the President.

Live footage aired on local broadcaster Express News showed the government and the opposition supporters shouting chants and thrashing each other as soon as the presiding officer, senator Yaqoob Khan Nasir, announced the results.

Sources informed The Nation that JUI-F chief once again came up with the suggestion that efforts should be made to bring outgoing chairman Mian Raza Rabbani of PPP as a consensus candidate for Senate chairmanship.
