Local students take part of nationwide 'March for our Lives' movement

Demonstrations of solidarity also took place around the world, including across cities in Canada, which unveiled stricter gun laws earlier this week including enhanced background checks.

For the past month Sherman, Sari Kaufman and other students have worked tirelessly on the rally to advocate for gun reform.

Fuentes bounced back up and proclaimed, "I just threw up on worldwide television, and it feels great!"

Edna Chavez of South Central Los Angeles opened her speech greeting everyone: "Hola, buenas tardes (Hellow, good morning)" she said before raising her fist. Lots of signs. Lots of creative and often amusing signs.

Shirts were being passed out to protesters at a shuttle bus stop that said, "Let's finally break their hold!" and "Keep our kids safe, common sense gun laws" while some had signs that read, "Why do your guns matter more than our lives?" and "Our ballots will stop bullets".

"Enough is enough", she said.

People of all ages were out and about at the protests.

It sure does. The 18-year-old's dad, Jose, was born in the Caribbean island of Cuba and arrived in the U.S. via NY in 1968.

At some march sites, counterprotesters appealed for others to respect for the Second Amendment. "He was crying, 'What if I'm in the hall, what if I can't get to my brother?'" "I'd say there's a lot of misinformation and I came to talk to people", Eric Ciabottonia, a 19-year-old engineering major from Penn State University, said.

While true that these students are getting a national spotlight because their friends were murdered, it's an incredibly callous and stupid thing to say.

Williams agreed with his fellow clergyman, calling for an end to America's culture of violence.

McCartney was one of several celebrities who performed or spoke at the rallies.

"You see that, politicians?"

"Every week you hear about a new shooting and nothing is done about it", McCartney told AFP.
