India at CWG Participation of two track and field athletes uncertain

Slamming the government for pruning over the number of officials of the Indian contingent being sent for the CWG, president Narinder Batra openly criticised the Sports Ministry at the contingent's send-off ceremony for striking off the names of 21 officials. The ministry, it is reliably learnt, has pruned the list of 330 athletes, coaches and support staff submitted by the IOA which includes 306 athletes, coaches and support staff, 13 para athletes and their support staff and 11 IOA contingent staff. The bone of contention largely seems to be the names under the head "Extra Officials" in the list sent out by the IOA to the Sports Ministry. He emphasised the need for extra coaching, mentoring and support staff which could make a difference in athletes' performances.

"The matter has not reached the IOA yet but as far as I know, the rule states that a replacement would only be allowed if a particular player sustains injury or falls ill", Batra told reporters on the sidelines of an official send-off ceremony of the Games-bound athletes.

The names of Annu Rani (women's javelin), P U Chitra (women's 1500m), Govindan Lakshmanan (men's 5000m and 10000m) and Siddhant Thingalaya (men's 110m hurdles) were there in the list even though they were not in the squad announced by AFI on March 10 after the Federation Cup National Championships (March 5-8). There is a 33 percent quota and beyond that if there is a requirement, such officials can travel and the expenses will be borne by the respective NSFs. "The government is not going to bear their expenses", Batra said.

She said of the charity: "They've been through it all before so they know what advice to give".

"We will surely have a word with the Ministry once we receive the final approved list", Batra said.
