Corker says Iran nuclear deal is likely on the outs

Pompeo may moderate some of his criticisms of the nuclear deal if he becomes secretary.

Iran's deputy foreign minister and chief nuclear negotiator Abbas Araqchi held negotiations on the eve of the committee's meeting with the European Union, Germany, France and Russian Federation before all sides sat at the negotiating table at the Palais Coburg Hotel in central Vienna.

State Department policy planning chief Brian Hook, who is running the negotiations with Europe, will lead the U.S. delegation to the larger meeting in Austria's capital.

Tillerson's departure means the Iran nuclear deal is in trouble.

The text of the document was also sent to European Union capitals on Friday to garner support for the decision to impose new sanctions, which would require the backing of all 28 European Union member states.

UK Shouldn't 'Rush Ahead of Evidence' in Skripal Investigation - Jeremy Corbyn
More than 30 Labour MPs have signed a motion which "unequivocally" accepts the Russian state's "culpability". While the UK, US, France and Germany issued a joint statement yesterday condemning Russian Federation ...

In the US, Iran deal supporters braced for what they see as the inevitable. At the same time, they're expected to start putting greater stress on Iran's missile development and its destabilizing role in the region.

"We will not accept any changes, any interpretation or new measure aimed at limiting" the 2015 deal between Iran and major powers, said Ali Shamkhani in remarks carried by the ISNA news agency. Neither issue is addressed in the nuclear deal, which deals exclusively with Iran's nuclear program.

"We got along actually quite well, but we disagreed on things", the president said.

However, he declined to indicate what would happen if and when such an agreement is reached, saying: "We are not under instructions from the president to go beyond seeking an agreement with our European allies".

To strike a balance, diplomats from the U.K., Germany and France drafted plans for new sanctions against Iran focused on its involvement in the Syrian civil war. US sanctions will resume unless Trump issues fresh "waivers" to suspend them on May 12.

Oil Edges Up on Positive Demand Outlook

18 de marzo de 2018, 09:27Tehran, Mar 18 (Prensa Latina) Iran demanded from Europe to stand up to the threats and bribes of US President Donald Trump, who claims sanctions against Tehran for its deterrent missile program, it was reported here today.

At the time Trump issued that deadline, his secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, promptly launched negotiations with the E3 in hopes of finding a way forward.

If the US reimposes sanctions on Iran, hard-liners there - who have always opposed the nuclear deal - would likely pressure Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to retaliate by restarting the country's uranium enrichment program.

"If America exits the deal and unilateral sanctions return, we will definitely not continue the deal because it will not serve our interests", Araqchi was quoted as saying.

The 2015 accord between Iran and the US, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany curtailed Iran's nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief. But at the end of the day I think this whole situation with North Korea and the way that it's shaping up right now is, as I mentioned, is somewhat unorthodox, and I think you're dealing with a leader there that probably doesn't think the same way that other countries and their leadership might.
