The administration has been threatening more - not less - immigration enforcement in California in response to a new state law that sharply limits cooperation with federal authorities.

"You know what, I'm thinking about doing it", Trump said at a roundtable with state and local officials to address ideas to stop gun violence in the wake of the Parkland school massacre.

U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a California Democratic, said Trump's comments were mean-spirited.

Trump mused Thursday that he might take the opposite approach to show California politicians how much the state depends on immigration agents for public safety. "The president's obsession with our state is growing more outrageous by the day", she said.

"The results of this operation are a clear indication of ICE's commitment regarding the role we play in keeping our communities safe by locating, arresting and ultimately removing at-large criminal aliens who pose a threat to public safety, and other immigration fugitives", said Daniel Bible, field office director for ERO in San Antonio.

The president's comments were the latest effort by the Trump administration to pressure "sanctuary cities" to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
