Italian police have arrested a gunman suspected of a carrying out a drive-by shooting spree that targeted African immigrants.

State television Rai said the suspect in the shooting was a white Italian man from Macerata.

Magistrates say witnesses saw the Nigerian suspect carrying the suitcases that were later found to contain the teenager's body. A local man, he reportedly ran previous year as a candidate in municipal elections for the anti-immigrant Northern League, which has since changed its name to the League to broaden its appeal.

The shootings were reported in different parts of Macerata, including near the town's train station. The news agency ANSA said two of the injured were black, and that witnesses reported that the auto was seen in the area where the woman's body was found and also near where the suspect lived.

The incident looks certain to jolt campaigning for a March 4 national election, with a centre-right alliance that leads in the polls promoting a fiercely anti-migrant programme.

He said: "Stay at home until further notice".

According to Italian news agency ANSA, he made a fascist salute at the city's war memorial before being arrested by police.

Macerata Mayor Romano Carancini confirmed that six foreigners, all black, were wounded in the shooting spree, one with life-threatening injuries. He posted to Facebook earlier this week of the Nigerian suspect, "What was this worm still doing in Italy?".

Of the other five victims, authorities said late Saturday that one was in intensive care, while the others had either undergone surgery or were scheduled to have surgery.

Italian news reports said that the vehicle contained two people.

Residents had been told to stay inside during the shooting and public transport was halted.
