Statistics Canada says the economy lost 88000 jobs in January

The local job market is in contrast with the national picture as Canada's unemployment rate rose to 5.9 per cent in January, up from 5.7 per cent in December 2017.

The unemployment rate edged up to 5.9 per cent from December's revised 5.8 per cent.

Ontario lost 59,300 part-time positions and created 8,500 full-time spots.

The number was influenced by a drop of 137,000 part-time positions, the largest single-month slump on record.

Economists surveyed by Bloomberg News had forecast the economy would generate 10,000 jobs in January, and the jobless rate would remain unchanged. Most of the other provinces also shouldered part-time losses, with Quebec shedding 31,000 positions.

Police to provide update on Bruce McArthur investigation
Investigators are now preparing to dig up the backyard at 53 Mallory Cres., and have been heating the frozen ground, Idsinga said. McArthur performed landscaping work at the house for years and was recommended to the couple by McArthur's sister.

The vigour that carried the Canadian labour market on its impressive run in 2017 hit a speed bump to start this year with its largest one-month job drop in nine years.

Victoria saw an unemployment increase for the second consecutive month at 3.9 per cent from 3.5. The jobs report can also be volatile month-to-month.

"Overall, a mysterious mix of good and bad, with the latter's impact blunted by how strong job gains were in the lead-up to these figures", CIBC chief economist Avery Shenfeld wrote in a research note to clients.

The hike was driven by an increase to the labour force and the number of people claiming unemployment.

Ontario's minimum-wage hike went into effect after a year in which the country's most populated province saw its economy strengthen and jobless-rate drop. The country's average hourly rate climbed 3.3 per cent to $26.83 over January of previous year, the first time since March, 2016, that wages grew faster than 3 per cent.

NutraBlend Foods announced just over a week ago that it would close its facility at 150 Adams Blvd.by the end of February, resulting in the loss of about 100 jobs.

"Today's sour news is at least in part an offset to the unusually strong gains seen late past year, and most likely does not represent the start of new trend".

However, economists also pointed to possible connections between Ontario's minimum wage and Canada's stronger average wage growth of 3.3 per cent in January.

Provincially, B.C. unemployment sat at 4.8 per cent in January, up slightly from 4.6, after shedding 5,100 jobs.

"It doesn't change the broader narrative around the Bank of Canada".
