Four students were shot and wounded, one critically, inside a Los Angeles middle school classroom Thursday morning and police arrested a female student believed to be 12 years old, authorities said.

A 12-year-old girl was booked on a charge of negligent discharge of a firearm after the shooting, police had said Thursday.

The victims are a 15-year-old boy, who was shot in the head, and a 15-year-old girl, who was shot in one of her wrists.

Officials at Los Angeles County and USC Medical Centre said both students were expected to make full recoveries, with staff describing the boy as "extremely lucky". Several others suffered minor injuries.

Police recovered a semiautomatic handgun from the scene.

Los Angeles police spokesman Josh Rubenstein said detectives are trying to figure out where the girl got the gun, which was unregistered, and why she brought it to school. She said he told her he was in a classroom next to the classroom where the shooting happened, heard a gunshot and knew the suspect. "I'm scared." Without thinking, Diego told her he will be right there, and everything was going to be OK.

The gunfire erupted just before 9 a.m. PT at Salvador Castro Middle School, just west of downtown Los Angeles.

Jordan said he saw a hole in the backpack, which the girl was holding, when she asked him to hide the gun for her.

A total of 14 shootings have occurred on school campuses across the United States in 2018 as of Thursday, according to Everytown for Gun Safety, a non-profit organization committed to measuring US gun violence with comprehensive and up-to-date data. Jordan says the girl, who is a friend, said the gun went off accidentally when she dropped the pack. The school was placed on lockdown, which later was lifted.

The shooting, which took place in an elective class with children of different ages, was the latest outbreak of gun violence at a United States school.

"This continues to be an active investigation", the Los Angeles Police Department said.
