Removing more than 700,000 apps that violated the Google Play store policies is impressive.

In a blog post titled, "How we fought bad apps and malicious developers in 2017", Google spotlights the numerous ways it has stayed ahead of bad Play Store Apps over the past 12 months.

The news isn't all bad: Google said 99 per cent of the bad apps were binned by tools that employ machine learning, so nobody ever had the chance to download them. Furthermore, new detection models helped to identify repeat offenders, resulting in the removal of 100,000 developer accounts as well as using the data collected to help make it more hard for these developers to re-join. Google claims that its advanced machine learning models help quickly sift through app submissions and flag them for inappropriate content. A substantial portion of the bad apps were copycats impersonating popular apps in hopes of getting downloads.

To put things in context, it's 70% more the number of apps Google removed in 2016.

Google's Play Store offers developers a faster, more open experience than Apple's version, which comes with lengthy reviews and seemingly random rejections. App developers with bad intent have previously offered fake apps in the form of WhatsApp as well. Google launched Play Protect apps to scan malware on Android devices. But said that it takes them "extremely seriously, and will continue to innovate our capabilities to better detect and protect against abusive apps and the malicious actors behind them".
