7-year-old girl raped, strangled and left in a dumpster

Five days after the kidnapping, on January 9, the girl's body was found on a garbage heap in the city, and the autopsy revealed that she was raped before being strangled to death.

Her murder ignited fury in Kasur, where residents attacked a police station.

"We don't have any expectations from police, as we gave proof to police including the CCTV footage, but they could do nothing", her uncle Hafiz Muhammad Adnan told Reuters.

According to details, forensic examination of the body has confirmed that the girl identified as Zainab was raped before being killed.

He further complained that more than 1,700 cases of sexual harassment and child abuse were reported in 2017, but the Punjab Government has been unable to arrest the culprits.

The official said a team of senior police officers had a year ago attempted a detailed analysis of all the cases in the light of circumstantial evidences, DNA test reports, statements of the two girls who survived the assaults, the witnesses and other relevant information.

Police said Zainab was strangled to death and an autopsy later revealed that she had been raped before being murdered.

The Punjab government has offered a reward of 10m rupees (£66,460) for information leading to the killer's capture, as well as compensation for the protesters killed on Wednesday. Zainab's parents, who were away on a pilgrimage at the time she went missing, blamed the police for their slow response. The protests were mainly centred on the allegation that the police was lax in investigating such crimes.

Responding to the bereaved father's appeal, Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa condemned the incident and directed military to support civil administration for arresting the culprits and "bringing them to exemplary justice", the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the mouthpiece of Pakistani army, said in a statement.

On Wednesday, Zainab was laid to rest even as massive and violent protests and riots rocked Kasur.

Protesters set vehicles on fire and clashed with police after claims they had failed to arrest a single suspect in any recent child abuse cases, Pakistan's The News said.

The efforts were prompted in July 2017 when a case similar to Zainab's surfaced.

"They must have taken action against it", said Haq. As a father just hearing about this has made me feel sick.

Cricket-turned-politician Imran Khan too spoke on the rape and murder.

He tweeted: "The condemnable & horrific rape & murder of little Zainab exposes once again how vulnerable our children are in our society".

Assange later taunted after Lasso's loss that he would "cordially invite Lasso to leave Ecuador within 30 days". He has also called Assange a hacker.

Moreover, the police and the government have to implement laws against child abuse, with true spirit, to ensure the protection of children.
