US Advises Citizens: Avoid Visiting These Five Mexican States

The U.S. State Department has issued its highest travel warning for five states in Mexico following a revamp of its travel advisory system Wednesday.

Countries labeled "do not travel" present a high likelihood of of life-threatening risks for travelers, and USA government officials stationed in those places have "very limited ability" to assist Americans in distress, according to the State Department.

The new ranking is likely to be a boost to country's tourism sector, which has in the past been affected by America's warning on its nationals against travel to Kenya.

Level 2 - Exercise Increased Caution: Be aware of heightened risks to safety and security.

An additional 11 states were slapped with Level 3 warnings, urging Americans to "reconsider travel" there because of crime and gang activity.

Colima, Guerrero, Michoacán, Sinaloa and Tamaulipas have all been classified as a level 4 risk, the highest on the scale.

The advisory informs American citizens that the U.S. government has limited ability to provide emergency services to them in Pakistan due to the security environment.

Ten war zones and failed states are ranked level four, "Do Not Travel": Afghanistan, Central African Republic, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Somalia, South Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

The advisory, posted on the US State Department's website, said violent crimes, such as home invasions, armed robberies, homicide and sexual assaults occur frequently, even at all-inclusive resorts and Jamaican police "lack the resources to respond effectively to serious criminal incidents".

A statement issued by the State Department also said that the detailed "Travel Advisories" will also will provide "clear reasons for the level assigned", using established "risk indicators" such as "crime", "terrorism", "civil unrest", "health", "natural disater" and other potential risks not covered by previous risk indicators.

Cuba, which past year came with the travel advisory to not travel there, is now listed as level 3.

The US regularly updates its threat advisory which puts countries around the world in one of four categories based on threat perception and how swiftly aid can be provided to American citizens.

USA travelers were also warned to avoid unnecessary trips to the Central American nation of Guatemala due to the high criminal violence, sexual assault, armed robbery and gang-related offenses.

Still, officials in Los Cabos (a destination in Baja California Sur) found the rating to be positive, pointing out that there are no travel restrictions to the region.

Venezuela and Russian Federation are examples of countries with level-3 ratings. But the travel advisory said there are "no restrictions on USA government employees for stays in". A new system unveiled yesterday scraps all that. US citizens also can not travel to North Korea with just a USA passport.
